About Afghanistan

The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is a landlocked country in the Central Asia with an area of 6,52,090 sq km. Country Map

The country originally known as Ariana or Bactra and then as Khorasan (the land of the rising sun) is bounded by Iran and Turkmenistan to its west, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to its north, Pakistan to its east and south, while the northeast portion of the Wakhan province of Afghanistan by China. Afghanistan has borders with the following countries: China,Iran,Pakistan,Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan .

Its capital city Kabul is located at the bank of river KabulKabul City . As per recent estimate made in 2010, the total population of Afghanistan is 29.12 million. The main ethnic groups are Pashtun,42 percent;Tajik,27 percent;Hazara,9 percent;Uzbek, 9 percent;Aimak,4 percent;Turkmen,3 percent; and Baloch,2 percent. The population growth rate is 2.6 % per year. The demography of the country shows that about 44.6 percent of the population are younger than 15 years of age, and 2.4% is older than 64. The estimated birthrate is 45.8 per 1,000 populations, and the estimated death rate is 19.6 per 1,000 populations. The infant mortality rate is 155 deaths per 1,000 live births. Life expectancy is 44.2 years for males and 44.4 years for females. The fertility rate is 6.6 children born per woman.
